Intrauterine insemination is a timed infertility treatment procedure, during the course of which the best quality sperm are injected into the uterine cavity using a fine catheter.
Sperm from a woman’s spouse, a specific male to whom she is not married, or a donor sperm can be used for insemination procedure. IUI is indicated if the cause of infertility is the mild pathology of sperm, problems with the cervix, or if the cause of infertility is unclear.
At the beginning of infertility treatment, the performance of 3-6 IUI procedures is justified, provided that the woman's fallopian tube(s) are passable.
IUI is performed both during the natural menstrual cycle and in combination with stimulated ovulation. In the case of the latter, the chances of becoming pregnant are somewhat higher.
Around the time of the expected ovulation, the man will provide a semen sample. Intercourse should be avoided for 2-5 days prior to giving the sample.
During the course of semen processing, the best quality sperm are isolated from the other components of semen.
The resulting high-fertility sperm preparation is injected into the uterine cavity using a fine catheter.
Pregnancy success rate depends on the woman’s age, the type of ovulation stimulation, the quality of the sperm preparation, as well as the cause and duration of infertility. The probability of becoming pregnant after completing 3 IUI cycles is about 10-15% for women under 40 years of age, 5% for women who are 41 years of age, and less than 5% for women who are 42 years of age.
